Information Referring Professionals

The Neuropsychological Outpatient Clinic at Bielefeld University is a university outpatient clinic according to §117 (SGB V). This means that we can offer diagnostics and therapy solely for the purposes of research and teaching. We are not licenced to provide standard healthcare services.

Initial Consultations and Treatment Offer

Our offer are aimed at patients with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral impairments resulting from organic brain disorders, as well as children with ADHD. We do not offer treatment for patients whose cognitive impairments are due to mental health conditions (e.g., depression).

If you are unsure whether our outpatient clinic is the right place for your patient, you are welcome to get in touch with us in advance.

Referrals to Our Outpatient Clinic

  • Neuropsychological treatment requires a confirmed neurological (organic brain) disorder. The diagnosis must be made by a neurological specialist or a neurological clinic.
  • The prerequisite for the treatment of post-Covid patients is a diagnosis of U09.9 (G) and G93.3 (G).
  • For patients with a long-standing neurological diagnosis (e.g., MS or Parkinson’s disease with diagnosis in 2007), we require documentation of newly emerging cognitive or emotional symptoms, or a worsening of an existing neuropsychological impairment.
  • For children referred for ADHD assessment, we will ask the attending physician for a referral letter (Konsilschein) to rule out possible organic causes of the symptoms.
  • It is very helpful if patients bring relevant prior medical records (e.g., radiology reports, acute hospital discharge summaries) and a current medication plan.
  • We are a research outpatient clinic. Patients should be prepared to receive information about potential participation in research studies and to be asked for written consent. All of our research projects comply with data protection regulations and have been approved by an ethics committee.
  • We are also a teaching clinic. As is customary in university clinical settings, patients should expect that students may observe or participate in diagnostics or treatment under supervision.

If you have any questions regarding patient referrals, please feel free to contact us.
